Ogham |
|
|
The ancient Celts used the Ogham (pronounced "Ohm") or Tree Alphabet from around 600 BCE to 700 CE but, with the revival of Celtic tradition was used in the middle ages and again in the 20th Century. Oghma was believed to have been created by Ogma, a Celtic sun deity and the patron god of poetry. A symbolic language very useful to Druids and Bards with each character indicating a wide range of ideas relating to Celtic philosophy.
Each of the original 20 characters has a name which coincides with a tree or plant sacred to the Celts. There are an additional 5 characters added later (dipthongs known in Irish as "forfedha" meaning additional letters), not seen prior to medieval times, which also have names of trees and plants.
It has been discovered mostly carved on stones and wood with a hard edge used as the center line. Ogham was also used to facilitate secret messages on paper/parchment and with fingers across the nose or shin. This was particularly useful after the Roman invasion of the Celtic lands.
It was and still is used as a method of divination, since each character has a host of meanings. The Druids took divination very seriously and used sticks inscribed with Ogham to devine the secrets which lie within things or the future.
